I've been listening to a lot of heavy straight ahead lately, mostly Branford's Marsalis's group which features the amazing Tain Watts...

anyways, i was wondering, if you've heard him, or many other jazz drummers for that matter, whenever the soloist plays a simple, repeated rythmic figure there is a tendency for him to totally blow over the figure and play extremely free, breaking up the time with rolls, polyrythmic figures and accents and what not. (For examples, listen to "yes or no" or "persuance" from brandford's group's take of a love supreme...
My question is, do you think there's an internal logic to playing stuff like that? how does a drummer break up the time to such a degree and play so much over the music while still keeping a forward momentum going?
